How can I apply for a place on the course?
Applications for the 2020 Junior Summer Rowing Course will open in early 2020. Fill out our contact form to
register your interest. Someone will be in touch to confirm your place. Please do not attempt to make payment before you have received an official offer by email. Due to the popularity of the courses, we are unable to reserve places.

What do I need to bring?
- Suitable training kit for a maximum of three training sessions per day.
- Suitable footwear for boating on the Tideway. Either Wellington boots or flip-flops. Trainers are not permitted. A limited number of Wellington boots are provided at the Boathouse, please provide your own flip-flops.
- Water bottle. This must be full before each session and carried with you at all times.
- Refreshments. Lunch and break time refreshments are provided, but please provide any additional snacks or refreshments you require
- Spending money. Please budget for your personal expenses throughout the course and during your time in London.
- Towels are provided and you can use the laundry facilities available on-site, however, you may wish to bring an extra towel to have as a spare dry one.
What time does the summer rowing course run?
The first session begins at 09.00 daily, therefore we ask participants to arrive by 08.45 ready for a prompt start. The afternoon session finishes at 16.00 with the exception of Friday, which ends at 15.00 to allow participants to travel home.
Who is the summer rowing course suitable for?
The Summer Rowing courses are suitable for junior rowers aged 14 – 18 with some prior experience. The Competitor course focuses on progressing from quads and doubles to singles. The Performance course is designed for those who want to improve their performance and compete at prestigious summer regattas.
What is the proportion of boys to girls on each course?
All courses are mixed gender however, accommodation is offered as either all male or all female. Generally, there is an even split of boys and girls.
How much time is spent rowing each day?
Weather permitting, there are two rowing sessions per morning lasting between 60 to 90 minutes each. The afternoon is then dedicated to sessions on land including technique and fitness.
What do participants do during the afternoon session?
The afternoon sessions cover various topics to support participants’ rowing technique and overall fitness. Sessions generally include; sports nutrition, correct weightlifting technique, core stability and posture, and inspirational talks from elite rowers and Olympians.
Who will be coaching and teaching on the course?
Our summer rowing courses are delivered by highly experienced and qualified rowing coaches, many of whom have competed at an international level and teach at schools or clubs locally. All coaches are DBS checked.
What boats will we use to row?
We use a range of boats for the Junior Summer Rowing Courses, from singles to eight’s and octuples. Depending on your ability the coaches will decide what boat you will go out in each session. If you want to concentrate on one discipline more than the other i.e. sculling, please note this down on the application form when applying.
What's included in the course fee?
- Lunch and break time refreshments are provided for all participants
- Use of Imperial College Boat Club boats, blades and gym equipment
- Residential courses include shared twin accommodation at the Boathouse and three meals per day
- Experienced coaches
What food will we be eating?
Our catering team prepares a carefully designed lunch on-site for all participants based upon their training schedule for the week. Fruit and refreshments will be available for the mid-morning break.
Breakfast and an evening meal will also be provided for all residential participants.
Participants are required to provide any other snacks they require.
We endeavour to cater for all dietary requirements, however, this requires advance notice so please note this on the application form when booking.
Where is the accommodation?
The accommodation is on-site in a fully self-contained flat above the boathouse. All rooms contain twin beds and are shared between two people.
Can my I share a room with someone else if I am attending the course on my own?
This is still possible but please book early as we only have a limited number of rooms available.
Can I arrive the night before the course starts?
Yes, it is possible to book an early arrival at a cost of £46.50 per person, payable on arrival. If you wish to arrive the night before, you must book with Sport Imperial and arrive between 18.00 and 19.00. Please note that this does not include an evening meal, but does include breakfast on the Monday morning.

Are evening activities organised for residential participants?
Yes. A range of evening activities will be offered, for example, ten pin bowling, swimming, etc. However please be aware these activities will incur an additional charge to the participant.
